Dr. George V. Rosenberg, 99, lifelong native of Abbeville, died Saturday, March 5, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born in Abbeville, SC to the late Solman H. and Octavia Schwerin Rosenberg. He attended North Main and Greenville Street Elementary Schools. Dr. Rosenberg was a graduate of Abbeville High School, Class of 1933. He graduated from The Citadel in 1937 with a BS degree in Pre-Med and received his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1941. In July of 1942, he was called to active duty in the United States Army. He served in the states and in the European Theater during WWII. ‘Doc’, as he was affectionately known, began his practice of general surgery and obstetrics in Abbeville in1948 and practiced for 51 years until his retirement on July 15, 1999 at the age of 83. Widely known and respected, he delivered over 3000 babies. In 1942, he married the late Edith Cochran of Laurens and together they enjoyed their passion as avid horse lovers. They owned a horse farm where they raised Purebred Arabian horses, many of which won top prizes in various horse shows. ‘Doc’ capably served as Chief of Staff of Abbeville Hospital multiple terms and as a member of the Board of Trustees for several years. He was involved in his community where he was active on various boards and was a Mason and Shriner. Dr. Rosenberg’s career has been truly outstandingly remarkable. He was a dedicated small town doctor, serving his patients in every imaginable capacity. In addition to his wife and parents, Dr. Rosenberg was preceded in death by two brothers, Sol Rosenberg, Jr. and Philip H. Rosenberg; and two sisters, Octavia Guy and Cecilia Moise. Dr. Rosenberg is survived by his three children, Grace R. Nelson of Abbeville, Patsy R. Riley and her husband Milburn of Westminster, and Herbert Manning Rosenberg and his wife Patrice of Abbeville; seven grandchildren, Chad, Ken, Lucy, Nick, Don, Elizabeth, Herb and nine great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Jenny G. Rosenberg and several nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. The family expresses their sincere appreciation for the kind and loving care that Ms. Mary Haskell has given Dr. Rosenberg. Her attention to his every wish and need was unsurpassed. Graveside services to honor Dr. Rosenberg’s life will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016 in Melrose Cemetery. Following the service the family will greet friends at the home of Herby and Patrice Rosenberg.
