Herbert Donald “Don” Hill Sr., 85, of Greenville, SC and widower of Elizabeth Nelle Hill died Thursday morning December 24 at Florida Hospital in Kissimmee, Florida. He was the son of the late Lee Roy Hill and the late Ethel Mae Hill of Greenville, SC. He attended Greenville High School where he co-starred with Joanne Woodward in the 1947 school play. He graduated from The Citadel in 1951 with a BS in business and served as second lieutenant in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Following the war, he joined Sears, Roebuck and Co. as a management trainee in 1956 and rose to the level of store manager in Goldsboro, NC, Coral Gables, FL, and Lakeland, FL from which he retired after 30 years. He was the proprietor of the Island Book Shelf Bookstore on St. Simons Island for many years after his retirement. Mr. Hill led an active life up to the very end and greatly enjoyed spending time with his family. Surviving are three sons, Bart Hill, Scott Hill and his wife, Carolina, and John Hill, all of Kissimmee, FL; two daughters, Leigh Gardener and her husband Nigel of Savannah, GA and Ashley Hill of Richmond, VA; his sister, Ethel Lee Hill Sparks of Greenville, SC, 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. The graveside funeral service and interment will be held at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens on St. Simons Island, GA at 2:00 0’clock Tuesday afternoon, with viewing/visitation starting at 1:30 in the mausoleum.
