R. Kenneth (“Ken”) Weeks, 92, a retired civil engineer whose career spanned more than 60 years, died Wednesday, July 8 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The son of Leon Weeks, a lawyer, and Nettie Weeks, a homemaker, he was born in St. George, SC, in 1923. He attended The Citadel in Charleston, SC, and graduated in 1943. He then entered the Marine Corps and met his future wife, Mildred Siler, also a Marine, while both were stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC.
Mr. Weeks began his career working as a design engineer in Knoxville, TN, and Augusta, GA. He relocated to Norfolk in 1951 where he became self-employed, first with the design firm of Causey and Weeks Engineers, and then with his own consulting firm, R. Kenneth Weeks Engineers. His firm was responsible for the design and construction of major civil works for municipalities and government agencies. He was a straightforward, no-nonsense professional engineer with high standards. He retired at the age of 85.
He was active in community and church affairs and joined the Norfolk Rotary Club in 1955 and served as president from 1970 to 1971. He was a longstanding member and deacon in Talbot Park Baptist Church. His professional memberships included the American Society of Civil Engineers where he served as the Virginia president in 1965 and from which he received an Outstanding Civil Engineer Award in 2013.
Mr. Weeks was a private pilot who flew both for business and pleasure, including making family vacation flights to destinations as far as Canada and the Bahamas. He enjoyed boating and fishing, gardening, college football, and spending time on the Outer Banks with his family.
He is predeceased by a daughter, Beverly Anne Weeks-Perkins, and is survived by his wife Mildred of 70 years, his son Kenneth Weeks, Jr., and a daughter, Lynda Maree Weeks.
A Graveside Service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 12th in Forest Lawn Cemetery with The Rev. Aaron Brittain officiating.
