William T. McSweeney, 93, of Charleston, South Carolina passed away Wednesday evening surrounded by his loving family. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. William T. McSweeney are invited to attend his Funeral Service 10:00 AM Monday, July 13, 2015 at Park Circle Presbyterian Church in North Charleston. The interment will follow at 2:00 PM at Beaufort National Cemetery with Military Honors. Online condolences may be made at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. Born of the family of Gov. Miles B. McSweeney and raised by the gentile hands of the late Rev. Arthur Prioleau Toomer and Jessie Caldwell Toomer in his beloved Beaufort, SC, he moved to Charleston and served as a part of the 253rd Coast Artillery for the majority of WWII. After the war, he attended the Citadel under the GI Bill and upon graduation took employment at the Charleston Paper Mill, resulting in a 35 year career there as Safety Director and then Director of Public Relations. Well known in the greater Charleston area as a percussionist, he played with big bands and combos for the entirety of his life. His clever wit, ever-present smile, and devotion to family, friends, church, and nation will always be remembered by those who knew him. William is survived by his wife, Ruth Walsh McSweeney; his son, William Toomer McSweeney, Jr. and wife, Marie Helene McSweeney, of Birmingham, AL; his daughter, Lynn McSweeney Snook and husband, John Snook, of Greenville, SC; his granddaughters, Julie Smith of Isle of Palms, SC, and Peggy Gregory, husband, Jeff Gregory and great-grandson, Dylan Gregory, of Isle of Palms; his grandson, Jonathan Smith and wife, Jamiee Murray Smith, of Boston, MA.
