Colonel (Ret.) David Bochniowich, 79, son of the late Andrew and Edna Puzio Bochniowich, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015, in Tavares, Fla.
He is survived by his wife, Marydel Gaiser Bochniowich; son, Christian Bochniowich, Park City, Utah; stepchildren, Thomas (Michelle) Gaiser, Tavares, Fla.; David Gaiser, North Tonawanda, N.Y.; John Gaiser, North Tonawanda, N.Y.; and Lisa (Mac) McCarthy, North Tonawanda, N.Y.; sister, Carole Dombroski, Old Forge; grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
His sister, Andrea Renna, preceded him in death.
After graduating from Old Forge High School (1953), he was drafted to play Major League Baseball for the Chicago White Sox, but instead chose to accept a full football scholarship to the Citadel – the Military College of South Carolina – and play for Al Davis.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Freemasons.
He worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Commerce, Philadelphia, Pa., and the United States Department of Commerce, the United States Office of Management and Budget, and was director of the United States Economic Development Administration, Washington, D.C.
He was one of the top 10 civil engineers in the United States, which led to his special assignment as project director for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y., where he was responsible for all design and construction.
During the Reagan administration, he was given the special assignment for assistant to the president as director and coordinator of the 1983 Summit of Industrialized Nations in Williamsburg, Va.
Upon retirement from the U.S. government, he received a commendation for 21 years of government service.
David served as chairman of the Republican Party in Lackawanna County, and was also borough engineer in Old Forge through two administrations.
All who knew and loved him will sadly miss him.
A graveside service with full military honors will take place June 10, 2015, at 1:30 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.
