Robert A. Barber, Sr., 89, of Newberry, SC and Bowens Island in Charleston, SC died Sunday, February 1, 2015 at his residence on Bowens Island.
He was born in Charleston on April 11, 1925, the son of the late Leroy Archibald Barber and Sarah May Chaplin Barber Bowen and the stepson of James A. Bowen.
Mr. Barber was a submariner during World War II. After graduating from the Citadel with a B.S. in Commerce, he worked with
C & S Bank for 38 year as General Auditor, retiring as a Senior Vice President.
He was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Newberry, and a former member of Virginia Wingard and Folly Beach United Methodist Churches where he served as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent of Sunday School.
He served as the Worshipful Master of Friendship Masonic Lodge in Charleston and of Dutch Fork Masonic Lodge in Columbia He was an active member and regional officer of the Civitan Club in Charleston and Columbia and a member of the SC Bankers Association.
Bob was a quiet, gentle man who loved life with his wife and family. He had a wry sense of humor and shared all that he had with his extended family and friends, as well the friends of his children.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lucille Kelly Barber; children, James R. Epting, Jr. (Irene) of Irmo, Robert A. Barber, Jr. (LaNelle) of Charleston, J. Michael Barber (Susan) of Columbia, Karen B. Danielowski (Cas) of Charleston, J. Patrick Barber (Becky) of Folly Beach; daughter-in-law, Lynn P. Barber of Charleston; sister, Elizabeth B. Tiedemann of Folly Beach; grandchildren, Tonya M. Clamp (Joey), James R. Epting, III, Tonia M. McCrew (Jon), Hope B. McIntosh (Bill), R. Matthew Barber (Danielle), Allison V. Barber, J. Michael Barber, Jr., S. Lucas Barber (Megan), Grace M. Barber, Emily B. Workman (Ryan), Connor C. Danielowski, Kelly M. Danielowski, Taylor P. Barber, Brandon C. Barber and Bowen C. Barber; great grandchildren; Hunter Clamp, Katie-Ann Clamp, Mary Lesesne McIntosh, S. Frances Barber, Madelyn T. Barber, Jackson M. Barber, Charlotte L. Barber, Adelaide L. Tribble and S. Marsh Barber. He is predeceased by a son, W. Stephen Barber and a granddaughter, Erin R. Barber.
Visitation will be at the Barber home, 1526 Boundary St., Newberry on Friday, February 6 from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at Central United Methodist Church in Newberry, SC at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 7, 2015 conducted by the Rev. Tresco Shannon and the Rev. John Miller. Burial will be in Old St Andrews Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Memorials are suggested to the Newberry Opera House, the Ronald McDonald House in Columbia and Charleston or the “Free Clinic” in Newberry.
