Dean Alexander Doyal, 92, US Army LT. Col. Retired, of Fredericksburg, VA, formerly of Newport News, passed away on Monday, Dec. 15, 2014 at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Indianapolis, IN on April 19, 1922, he was the son of the late Galen Thomas Doyal and Beatrice Bowyer Doyal. He was predeceased by his sister, Dr. Hyla Juanita Doyal Cartwright. Mr. Doyal was commissioned into the Army from the Citadel in 1944 and was part of the”class that never was” (class of 1945). He met and married Eloise Esther Rudd in 1947 while stationed in Japan. He served in World War II occupied Japan, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, retiring as a LT. Col in 1972 after 28 years of active duty. He was a 50 year Mason and most recently, a member of the Mariner Lodge No. 215 in Newport News. He also was a 50 year member of the Scottish Rite. He enjoyed preparing gourmet meals and woodworking. He also worked diligently for many years on the Doyal genealogy. In addition to his wife, survivors include: his children, Talis June Doyal Lester of Jolo, WV; Charles Thomas Doyal (Barbara) of Fredericksburg, VA; and Michael James Doyal (Debbie) of Greer, SC; 6 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a sister, Alice Leonard Wallace Hamel of Henderson, NV. A memorial service will be in the future when the family can gather followed by burial services at Quantico National Cemetery.
