Pope Brooks Shealy Sr., of Columbia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 22, 2014, at his home in the arms of his loving wife, Lois. His children were also at his side.
Pope was born April 8, 1927, in Fairfield County, S.C., the son of Henry Berley and Sara Rebecca Brooks Shealy. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to all who knew him. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He finished The Citadel in 1949.
Pope retired in 1991 as Vice President of Exxon, USA after a 42 year career in Marketing and Land Development. The final 15 years were with the subsidiary Friendswood Development Company as Project Manager of the master planned community of Kingwood in Houston, Texas.
Pope is remembered by all who knew him as a sincere and caring man who enjoyed life each day of his 87 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Lois Chappell Shealy; his son, P. Brooks Shealy Jr. and wife, Sharon; his daughter, Nancy Shealy Benadum and husband, Jerry; son, Charles “Chuck” Henry Shealy and wife, Terri; four grandchildren, Sara Rebecca Shealy, Brooks Scott Benadum, Nicole Riviere Shealy and Austin Pope Shealy.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 28, 2014, in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, 6688 SH 269, Winnsboro, SC 29180, with a reception to follow at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel UMC Cemetery Fund in memory of Pope B. Shealy.
