Americus Columbus Mitchell IV, affectionately known as Mac, of Eufaula, AL, died September 29, 2014, at home. Funeral services were held Thursday, October 2, at 11:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church of Eufaula with the Rev. Dr. Scott Hohn and the Rev. Dr. Al Harbour officiating and Chapman Funeral Home directing. Burial followed the service at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation was held prior to the service Monday at the church. Mac was born August 6, 1918, in Eufaula to the late Americus Columbus Mitchell III and Katherine Lewis Mitchell. He enjoyed his role of big brother to his two siblings, (the late) Lewis Mitchell, and his sister, Lillie. In 1936 he graduated from Eufaula High School, where he played fullback on the EHS football team (which went undefeated his senior year), sang in the glee club, and played trombone in the school orchestra. He attended the Citadel for two years where he participated on the boxing team as a welterweight. After returning to Eufaula in 1938, Mac succeeded his father as CEO of the Eufaula Hardware Company and later established the Eufaula Concrete Company. In 1941 Mac married Dorothy Garrison, with whom he shared his life for 67 years until her death in 2008. Mac was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater. Mac’s civic activities include service on the Water Board for the city of Eufaula as well as chairman of the Industrial Development Authority. He was a member of the Commercial Club and sat on the board of directors at the First Federal Bank and the First National Bank. He attended First United Methodist Church, where he previously served as chairman of the Board of Trustees and other positions. He was recently recognized for his 85-year membership of the church. Mac was a lifetime turkey hunter who had an intense knowledge of and love for nature, which he enjoyed sharing with his sons and grandsons. Survivors include his son Ben Mitchell and his wife, Ann; his son Joe Mitchell and his wife, Mona; and his daughter, Pat Mitchell Ellis of Tuscaloosa; his sister, Lillie Mitchell Moorer; grandchildren Matt Mitchell (Dena), Logan Mitchell, Joanna Mitchell Jardina, Chris Mitchell (Holly), Dave Ellis (Beth), Lindsey Ellis Beatty (Kevin); Blake Mitchell (Candy), Brad Mitchell (Crissy), and Scott Mitchell (Ashlee); cousin, David Mitchell (Niamh); 21 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and caregiver and friend, Michelle McNair. Along with David Mitchell, pallbearers were his seven grandsons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church Building Tomorrow Together fund.
