Alvin Louis Steinberg, Jr. DDS, 86, of Charleston, SC, husband of Phyllis Craig Steinberg, entered into eternal rest Saturday, October 4, 2014. His funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 7, 2014, in Bethany United Methodist Church, 1853 Maybank Hwy., at 1:00 p.m. Interment, Bethany Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR., INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Al was born July 4, 1928 in Charleston, SC, son of the late Alvin Louis Steinberg and the late Ewing Johnson Steinberg. Al served in the U.S. Navy and then served in the U.S. Navy Reserves for 20 years. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, served on the Administrative Board, Council On Ministries and held many church offices. He was also an associate member of St. Johannes Lutheran Church. Al was a life member of the South Carolina Dental Association, the Honorary Dental Society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon and served on the State Board of Dentistry for six years. Al was a past president of The Rotary Club of Charleston, a former member of The Arion Society, a life member of The Deutscher Bruderliche Bund, a charter member of the Fort Johnson Estates Civic Club and Pool Corp., the Social Club, 3rd Friday Night Supper Club, former member of the James Island Yacht Club and the Sea Island Yacht Club. He was a graduate of The Citadel, Class of 1948 and Temple University School of Dentistry in 1952. Upon retirement from his private dental practice in 1978, Al was the first director of the dental department at the Coastal Center in Ladson for 10 years. He is survived by his wife of 60 years; daughter, Janet Steinberg Easterby (John G. Easterby, Jr.) of James Island; son, Craig Alvin Steinberg (Hye Kyong “Lee”) of Woodbridge, VA; sister, Dolly Steinberg McPherson of Birmingham, AL; brother-in-law, Ernest Thomas Craig (Barbara) of Ft. Myers, FL; five grandchildren: Brittany Easterby Selwa (Josh), Ryan Craig Easterby, Lindsay Nicole Easterby, Joshua Lee Steinberg and Andrew Louis Steinberg; four nieces and one nephew.
