John Selby Brengle, Jr., of Brandon, Fla., age 88, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 18, 2014.
Born on May 12, 1926, in Tampa, Florida on Frances Street. John was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Edna Brengle, parents, John Selby Brengle, Sr. and Mary Margaret Monroe Brengle, and brother George F. Brengle, and granddaughter, Karen Lynn Parton.
He is survived by his four children, John S. Brengle, III (Tina), Alexander Ray Brengle (Fran), Rebecca Nix (Ralph), and Stephanie A. Bartlett (Shannon), and stepchildren, Betty Sue Calo, Jerry Lane (Linda). He is also survived by grandchildren, Kenneth Brengle, John Brengle IV, Jonathan Cambas, Meaghan Mole, Grace Brengle, Brandon Evans, Joshua Brengle, Paige Bartlett, Melissa Cambas, Katie Brengle, Patrick Brengle, and Kelly Brengle, and great grandchildren, Maggie, William, Caydence “Big C”, Bailey and Presley, as well as numerous other family members and friends.
He was a graduate of the Citadel and then joined the United States Navy as an Apprentice Seaman and later retired at the rank of Commander. He also received a master’s degree from the University of South Florida in 1990.
Until his passing, he enjoyed the fellowship he was a part of at the Limona Village Chapel in Brandon, Florida.
Being a part of the Boy Scouts of America was his passion. He was a scout member of Troop 4, Tampa’s oldest troop. He served as a scoutmaster for a majority of his adult life. He was previously a scoutmaster for troops 49 and 99, and was serving with Troop 399, a troop of mentally and physically challenged young men, at the time of his passing. He worked with Bill Hilcourt to develop “ALL OUT FOR SCOUTING.” During his service with the Boy Scouts, he received the Silver Beaver award in 1974, the Award of Merit for the Timucua District in 1987, and in 2005, Youth Leadership award from the Timucua District. He also served as Counsel Commissioner for four years on the Executive Committee and Executive Board, and an Order of the Arrow Brotherhood Member from1970 to present.
