YORK — Mr. Robert Hanna Moore, a career Army man, a community servant, a teacher, father, grandfather and husband, died Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at home after complications from Parkinson’s disease. He was 82. Funeral service will be Saturday, July 28, 2007, 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, York, S.C., with the Rev. Don Thacker and the Rev. John Frerking officiating. He will be laid to rest in familiar territory with military honors, just across Liberty Street in nearby Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. Moore was born Aug. 28, 1924 into this world to the late Robert H. and Margaret Bratton Moore in a house that still stands on East Liberty Street in downtown York. A 1941 York High School graduate, Moore joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and made a 22-year career of it, retiring in 1965 as a Major. During that time he participated in the Luzon invasion in the Philippines during World War II and the U.S. occupation of Japan and Korea. His final assignment was at Fort Campbell, Ky., with the 101st Airborne Division. Along the way, Moore found time to earn a bachelor’s degree from The Citadel (1959) and a master’s degree in business administration from Winthrop University (1975). Always one to multi-task his talents, Moore, in the 1980’s, taught business courses to sailors on board of U.S. Naval carriers stationed in the Middle East. Moore was as much a politician and community servant as he was a military man. He served as York’s city manager three times from 1965 to 67, 1976 to 1980 and briefly as interim manager in 1985. In between, he was a York city council member from 1967 to 68, mayor from 1968 to 70 and ran unsuccessfully in the 1974 Fifth District Congressional race. He also was the city’s codes administrator in 1976. Mr. Moore was the widower of Lois Ashe Moore. He is survived by his wife, Judith Frerking Moore of the home; daughters, Marie Moore and Eliza Moore, both of York; sons, Robert H. Moore III of Seneca, S.C., and Anthony W. Moore of York; stepdaughters, Shawn S. Giese of Columbia, S.C., and Stephanie Reed of Richburg, S.C.; sister, Mason Barrett of Waynesville, N.C.; and eight grandchildren. The family will greet friends following the service at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to The Citadel, 171 Moultrie St., Charleston, SC 29409-6180; Hospice & Community Care, P.O. Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731; or First Presbyterian Church, 10 Liberty St., York, SC 29745. M. L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, Clover, S.C., is serving the family of Mr. Moore.
