WILLIAM F. SACHS COLUMBIA — William Ferguson Sachs, 76, husband of Lillian Lindsay Sachs, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Columbia after a long illness. Born Oct. 6, 1928, in Bethlehem, Pa., he was a son of the late Evelyn Gracely Sachs and Edward Julius Sachs. Mr. Sachs attended Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pa. where he later served as chairman of the board of visitors. He graduated from The Citadel in 1951 where he was a very active alumnus, having served as president of the Association of Citadel Men and The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. He served in the Korean War in the 25th Infantry Division, 14th Regiment, and was awarded the Combat Infantry Man’s Badge and the Bronze Star. He went to work for Home Finance Company in Charlotte in 1954 and moved to Columbia in 1963. In 1973 he founded First Financial Corp. where he was chairman and president until recently. Mr. Sachs was the past president and director of the South Carolina Financial Services Association. He was a past director and staff member of the University of Colorado National Installment Banking School. He was a member of the committee of several men who first brought Young Life to Columbia. Mr. Sachs was currently serving on the South Carolina State Board of Financial Institutions, having been appointed by three governors. He was a summer resident of Blowing Rock, N.C. for many years. He was a member of the Palmetto Club, Capital City Club, Blowing Rock Country Club and St. John’s Episcopal Church. Bill Sachs was a man of great energy and enthusiasm and it showed in every aspect of his life. He flew his own plane up until his recent illness. Surviving are his wife of 51 years of Columbia a daughter, Lindsay Sachs Long and husband Ernest B. Long of Charleston a son, Richard E. Sachs of Columbia four grandchildren, William F. Sachs III of Columbia, Lilly Sachs of Blowing Rock, Elizabeth Long and Bethea Long of Charleston and a step-granddaughter, Caroline Long Parnell. He was preceded in death by a son, William F. (Billy) Sachs Jr. and a brother, Edwards Sachs Jr. Funeral services will be held at noon Monday at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Wheat Street in Columbia with the Rev. Fletcher Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Charles McCreight, Everett Gasque, Barnes Boyle Jr., Dr. James Weston, C. Edward Williams, Frank Wooten, Gen. D.E. Rosenblum, Charles Fonville, Harold Shokes and Hampton Walker. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the home, 1412 Kathwood Drive.
