The Rev. Dr. John William Setzer Jr., 63, Poplar Creek Drive, Wilkesboro, N.C., died Monday, June 16, 2003, at his home. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with Father Arthur Harris and Dr. Sydnor Thompson III officiating. Dr. Setzer was born in Columbia, S.C., Feb. 6, 1940, to John William Setzer Sr. and Christine Ruby Edwards. He attended The Citadel, where he received his bachelor of arts in English in 1962. He attended Duke University Divinity School and received his master of divinity in pastoral care in 1965. He also attended Trinity College, University of Glasgow, Scotland from 1966 to 1967; Wake Forest University to complete his course work for master of arts in literature and theology from 1970 to 1971; and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary receiving his doctor of ministry in pastoral ministry in 1993. Dr. Setzer was ordained as a priest on March 10, 1970, and was an Episcopal priest at large. Dr. Setzer was a member of the diocese of Alabama and western North Wilkesboro. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Dr. Setzer was a member of the Rotary Club. He was a licensed marriage and family therapist, a member of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. He was the spiritual director for many parishioners and clergy, wrote newspaper columns and was a master wood carver. He is survived by his wife, Betty Setzer of the home; daughter, Katie Kamphausen, Chicago; stepdaughter, Kathleen Rubin, Olympia, Wash.; stepson, Charlie Johnson, Portland, Ore.; sister, Christine Anzalone, Florida; and three stepgrandchildren. The family will receive at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wilkes, P.O. Box 609, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
