Sumter — L. Allen West, 77, widower of Margaret Ellen Sauls West, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at his home. Born in Spartanburg, S.C., he was a son of the late Robert James West and the late Roberta Kitchen West. Mr. West was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and was the Four-Year-Old Sunday School Class teacher for many years. He was a graduate of The Citadel and did post-graduate work at Northwestern University, Loyola University and DuPaul University. He was a longtime member of the Sumter Kiwanis Club and was a lifelong member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the South Carolina Association of Certified Accountants. He was a retired C.P.A. He was a United States Air Force veteran, serving in World War II. Surviving are a daughter, Margaret West van Buick and her husband, Hennie; and two grandchildren, Marc and Sydney van Buick, all of Sumter. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. Ed McLeod officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, 234 Haynsworth Street. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Youth Program, 9 W. Calhoun Street, Sumter, SC 29150.
