POWELL, Wyo. – 2nd Lt. Therrell Shane Childers USMC, age 30, was the first American killed with the war with Iraq on Friday, March 21, 2003. He was born on June 19, 1972 in West Hanlin, West Virginia, to Joseph and Judy (Rose) Childers. He graduated from Harrison Central High School in Gulfport, Mississippi, in 1990. He joined the USMC in July of 1990, doing Basic Training at Paris Island, South Carolina. He then attended LAV-divers training at Camp Pendleton, California. He served in the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm and following his return to the United States, was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He then was assigned to Marine Security Guard Duty serving at the American Consulate located at Geneva, Switzerland, and then the American Embassy located in Nairobi, Kenya. He then returned to Camp Pendleton, California, where he attended his second LAR. While stationed there, he made a West Pac Cruise. Upon returning, he attended the Citadel on the MECP Program. Upon graduation, he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. on June 15, 2001. Then it was on to Quantico, Virginia, to attend the Basic School and then Officer Infantry School. He was then assigned to the 1st Battalion 5th Marine A Company 2nd Platoon. He was deployed to Kuwait on February 4, 2003 with his assigned unit and was listed as KIA on March 21, 2003. His family shared that he was always interested in gathering information from those he was spending time with. He was full of questions. He was always involved in the here and now and was so proud to be a United States Marine. He is survived by his parents Joe and Judy Childers of Powell; a sister, Sandra Brown and husband Richard and their children Autumn and Aiden of Fort Hood, Texas; a brother, Samuel Childers and wife Cori and their children Aksel, Hannah and Marta of La Salle, Illinois; paternal grandparents Wilton and Alma Childers of Salt Rock, West Virginia; Uncles and aunts Donald and Brenda Childers of Salt Rock, Richard and Anita Childers of Huntington, West Virginia, Judy and Mike Hayes of South Point, Ohio, Natalie and Greg Walker of Aid, Ohio, Kathy and Randy Templeton of Arnold, Missouri, Donald and Agnes Rose of Powell, Wyoming, Zenda and James Eby of Lubbock, Texas; 17 first cousins and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Doug and Mae Rose of Weston, Idaho. Visitation will be held on Monday, 3 p.m. at Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home, Powell, Wyoming. Funeral Services are tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, 1 p.m. at the Cabre Gymnasium located at Northwest College, Powell, Wyoming. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery with full military honors being provided by the United States Marine Corps. Should friends desire, a memorial fund has been established at First National Bank and Trust, Powell, Wyoming with the memorials to be used by the family to honor the memory of their son, Shane.
