Osgood, Donald Tallman OSGOOD Donald Tallman Osgood, a resident of Jacksonville for the past 48 years, passed away on April 6, 2006 at Specialty Hospital of Jacksonville after a valiant struggle with pneumonia. Mr. Osgood was born in Washington D.C. on March 16, 1921. He is preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Tallman Osgood, father, Albert J. Osgood and brother, Ervin Osgood. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Sarah Glover Osgood; daughter Barbara Osgood-Cox and son-in-law Bruce Cox of Charlotte, NC; daughter Nancy Osgood of Los Angeles, California; grandson Jonathan Cox of Charlotte, NC; nieces Pam Osgood, Shirley Osgood, Judy Beck, Lisa Standing, and Susan Rowell; nephews John Glover, Odis Grier Glover III and Scott Glover; a blue heron named Herman who was his loyal fishing partner; and the many neighborhood children who he entertained with magic tricks and taught to fish in the lake behind his home. Mr. Osgood was the former Manager of the Northeast Florida agency of Mutual of New York (MONY), a company he served faithfully for over fifty years. In recognition of his outstanding leadership MONY names their most prestigious award, The Donald T. Osgood CLU Award in his honor. He was also a recipient of the Florida General Agents and Managers Association award for Outstanding Management and earned the professional recognition of Chartered Life Underwriter from the American College of Life Underwriters. In addition, he served as president of the Estate Planning Council and president of the Florida General Agents and Managers Association. He was a proud member of the Citadel, class of 1942 where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in business administration. As a Captain in the United States Army he served his country during World War II as part of the greatest generation. A long time member of Southside United Methodist Church, Mr. Osgood served as a member of the Board of Directors. He also served his community as a volunteer for the American Lung Associationand a board member of the Clara White Mission. For the past 20 years Mr. Osgood worked on a book about his grandfather, Dr. Dauphin W. Osgood, who served as a medical missionary to China in the early 1800s. His book, Facing Dragons, was published shortly before his death, realizing a long held dream. Services for Mr. Osgood will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 10th at Southside United Methodist Church with Dr. Wayne Wiatt officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, April 9th, at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Avenue.
