Wilson A. McElveen, ’49

Notice W. Ashby Bubba McElveen Jr., 78, husband of Barbara Moore McElveen, was promoted to glory on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at the Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. Born at his home, 208 N. Purdy St. in Sumter, he was a son of the late Wilson Ashby McElveen Sr. and the late Caroline Reese McElveen. Mr. McElveen was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder. He was a 1945 graduate of Sumter High School and a 1948 graduate of The Citadel. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served in the Korean War. He was the former owner and operator of McElveen Pontiac GMC. He was a former president of the Sumter Elks Club, former board member of the YMCA, former board member of The Salvation Army, former board member of the South Carolina State Municipal Association, former board member of the South Carolina State Museum, former member of the Sumter-Shaw Community Council, former member of the Sumter City-County Liaison Board, former member of the Sumter County Development Board, former member of the Tuomey Hospital Board of Trustees, former member of the Safe Federal Credit Union Board, former member of the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association, former board member of the Sumter County Planning Commission. He was a former member of Sumter City Council for eight years and a former mayor of Sumter for eight years. He was currently a member of the Sumter County Museum Board, a member of the Sumter County Genealogical Society, a member of the Sumter Historical Society, a member of the Mount Vernon Coffee Club and the Fortnightly Club. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 15. He was awarded the Silver Crescent by Gov. Mark Sanford in 2003 and was recently awarded the Citizen of the Community award by Mayor Joe McElveen. He was the first civilian to be named an honorary U.S. Air Force chief master sergeant. He was the author of two books about Sumter County, was the proprietor of Bubba Archives, hosted a local radio program and was a featured history columnist for The Item. Mayor Bubba was widely known through his weekly e-mail newsletter, Love From 208, which was received by approximately 2,000 individuals and will be greatly missed by many. Mr. McElveen was honored by having two blocks of Bartlette Street named in his honor where his former automobile dealership was located. Surviving are his wife of Sumter; two daughters, Nancy M. Hanson and husband, Bush, and Virginia M. McFaddin and husband, Henry, all of Sumter; a son, Wilson A McElveen III and wife, Sharon, of Columbia; six grandchildren, Barbara Reese McFaddin, Caroline Adele McFaddin, Patricia Leigh Hanson, Richard Mallory Hanson, Caroline Aimar McElveen, and Peyton Shuman McElveen. He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Reese McElveen. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Mark Durrett and the Rev. Josie Holler officiating. Burial will be in the Tirzah Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Dalzell. Pallbearers will be Dr. Henry Moses, Lathan Roddey, Mike Watson, Dickie Jones, Graham Osteen, and Coles Dwight. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Mount Vernon Coffee Club and the Fortnightly Club, and his grandson, Richard Mallory Hanson. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Henry McFaddin, 2830 Brownfield Way. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150; to the Sumter County Museum, 122 N. Washington St., Sumter, SC 29150; to Wilson Hall School, 2801 S. Wise Drive, Sumter, SC 29150; or to a charity of one’s choice. Online condolences may be sent to www.sumterfunerals.com.
