Hammie L. Chaplin, ’41

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – Mr. Hammie L. Chaplin, Jr., 81, beloved husband of Annie Bruce Livingston Chaplin, of Courtney Drive, entered into rest Sunday, October 6th, at University Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2002, at Grace United Methodist Church with Dr. James C. Adams and Dr. John M. Younginer, Jr. officiating. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. at Neeses Cemetery, Neeses, SC with military honors accorded at the graveside. Pallbearers will be Ed Wilson, John Monahan, Marc Paquette, S. L. Rutland, Jr., Sid Livingston and Michael Stone. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fellowship of Believers Sunday School Class. Mr. Chaplin was born in Prosperity, SC and lived in North Augusta for the past twenty-nine years, moving from Johnsonville, SC. He was the son of the late Hammie L. Chaplin, Sr., and Susan Quattlebaum Chaplin. Mr. Chaplin was a World War II Army veteran serving in Malta, North Africa and Southern France. He graduated from the Citadel in 1941 where he received his B. S. Degree in physics. He was the second youngest cadet to graduate from the Citadel at the age of nineteen. In 1941 he began his career with Santee-Cooper in Monks Corner, SC. He assisted in starting the first hydroelectric unit for the low country of South Carolina. During his employment he became the Manager of Transmission. From 1966 until 1974 he was the Plant Engineer at Wellman Industries in Johnsonville, SC. There he installed the facilitys first nylon and polyester recycling system in South Carolina. From 1974 until 1987 he was Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Aiken Electric Co-op. In 1987 until his death, he was Chief Engineer with Industrial Contractors, Inc. in Johnsonville, SC. Mr. Chaplin was a Registered Professional Engineer and Past President of the Aiken and Florence Chapters of the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers. He was Past President of the Aiken Chamber of Commerce and Past President of the Johnsonville Lions Club. He was a Mason and was active for many years with Gideon International. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. There he taught three Sunday school classes, and was a Certified Lay Speaker. He served as a Delegate to the Annual Jurisdictional and General Conferences for two terms and was active in the Prison Ministry. He was former Chairman on the Administrative Board at Grace United Methodist Church and Johnsonville United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Langford Chaplin. Additional survivors include two sons, Hammie L. Larry Chaplin, III and his wife Sarah of Simpsonville, SC and Robert Bruce Chaplin, Sr. and his wife Audrey of North Augusta, SC; two daughters, Suzanne Suzie Wattenbarger and her husband Tom of Columbia, SC; and Jean Ellen Timmons and her husband Charles of North Augusta, SC; a brother, Henry M. Nick Chaplin of Neeses, SC; six grandchildren, Shannon Redmond, Casey Chaplin, Robert Chaplin, Jr., Elizabeth Chaplin, Christopher Timmons and Catherine Timmons; two step-grandchildren, Eric Friedman and David Friedman, and one great-grandchild, Haley Redmond. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church Building Fund, 639 Georgia Avenue, North Augusta, SC 29841, or to Neeses United Methodist Church, Rowland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
