Name Residence: Charner W. Bramlett Spartanburg,SC Date of Death: 02/11/2007 Notice SPARTANBURG, SC– Dr. Charner Williams Bramlett (Capt. US Navy, Ret.), of Spartanburg, died suddenly in Costa Rica on Sunday, February 11, 2007, while attending a seminar. He was born in Charleston, SC, and was the son of the late Charner Scaife and Lora Williams Bramlett. He was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and The Citadel (Class of 1951), where he was a lifetime member of Sigma Pi Sigma National Physics Honor Society, and from Duke University Medical School. Dr. Bramlett completed his internship at Duke University with a semester in pediatrics at Oxford University, England. Part of his surgery residency was at Duke University and the remaining at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Washington, D.C. He was a member of The American College of Surgery. His tours of duty included Bethesda Naval Hospital, Charleston Naval Hospital, and two carriers, USS Shangri-La and USS Enterprise. He served as Commanding Officer of Naval Hospitals in Beaufort, SC, Guam, and Memphis, TN. During the Viet Nam War, the Navy sent him to Washington, D.C. to learn the Vietnamese language in order to train Vietnamese doctors in proper surgery procedure and set up surgical units in Saigon. Dr. Bramlett was a member of the Rotary Club of Spartanburg where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, and of other organizations. He was an avid duplicate bridge player at the Weir Group. Since his retirement, he has audited courses at Wofford College in Spanish and German, and has heard his lifelong love of Wagnerian Opera, The Ring Cycle, seven times. One of his treasures was the musical score of the operas given to him by the late Alia Lawson. He was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Circle, a participant in the Converse College Steinway Initiative, and a member of the Converse College Friends of Petrie School of Music. Dr. Bramlett is survived by his sister, Dr. Betty Bramlett, his two beloved cats, Sally and Winston Churchill, his longtime friend, Angie Liakos, Ret. Captain US Navy, San Diego, CA, and numerous cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 20, 2007, at The Episcopal Church of the Advent. Burial with full military rites will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Honorary Escort will be Rotarian tablemates.
