Mr. Russell Jeter, age 91, of 122 Cherokee Ave., Union, died Wednesday, November 5, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Union County, he was the husband of the late Anne Bolton Jeter and the son of the late Dr. R. Russell and Agnes Coleman Jeter. Russell, known to many as Bud, graduated from The Citadel in 1933. He was a business leader in Union prior to World War II. He served as an officer of Artillery in the Pacific Theatre. Upon his return he owned and operated an automobile dealership with William Coleman, his cousin. He later became interested in banking, eventually becoming vice-president of The First National Bank in Union. Mr. Jeter was a civic leader in Union for many years. His service to his community was something he believed strongly about. He was president of the Union County Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Union County School Board. He was an active member of the Union Rotary Club and Grace United Methodist Church. Mr. Jeter was also active in farming and was involved in many agricultural organizations. Mr. Jeter was instrumental in bringing the University of South Carolina to Union and was recognized as a founder of the Union Campus. He was an avid sports fan. Mr. Jeter never missed a Union Yellow Jacket football game and attended all the University of South Carolina Gamecocks home games when he was not at a Citadel game. Surviving are three sons, Russell L. Jeter of Beaufort, Robert C. Jeter of Isle of Palms and William B. Jeter of Union. Another son, John R. Jeter, predeceased his father. His oldest sister, Agnes M. Jeter, still resides in Union and lives in the family home place. Mr. Jeter has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Jeter Family Cemetery in Santuc immediately following the church service. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jeter Cemetery, Mrs. Jill Jeter, 115 Park Drive, Union, SC 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home is serving the Jeter Family.
