MOMEIER, JR., Walter Entered into eternal rest on the evening of July 1, 2007, Walter William Momeier, Jr., widower of Caroline Smith Momeier. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services Thursday, July 5, 2007 at one o’clock in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Interment, Bethany Cemetery Friends may call at Stuhr’s Downtown Chapel Thursday two hours prior to the service. Mr. Momeier was born September 2, 1921 in Charleston, SC, the son of Walter W. Momeier and Evelyn Sandifer Momeier. He attended public schools in the City of Charleston and lived on Rutledge Avenue throughout most of his school years. He attended High School of Charleston, one of the last schools which emphasized and taught the classics to its students. He was a graduate of The Citadel, Class of 1942. Following graduation, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army and served at Ft. Benning, The Infantry School. Assignments included paymaster and range officer to name a few. He married Caroline McMakin Smith on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1944 in St. Barnabas Lutheran Church. They were married fifty-seven years. After he left the Army, he started a career with Edward’s Department Stores as an accountant. The company grew into a regional chain of stores throughout South Carolina for the next thirty years. His duties included oversight of all accounting practices as well as real estate management. He became Comptroller and held a seat on the Board of Directors. The corporation merged with a retail chain from Nashville in 1977. He served as Financial Director for the City of Charleston until his retirement in June of 1983. Mr. Momeier was a member of The Grand Lodge of South Carolina, Life Member of Walhalla Lodge 66 (now Mariner Lodge) and a Master Mason. He was a Charter member of Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church on James Island. He served as Class Agent for The Citadel Development Foundation and for the Class of 1942 during the 1980’s. He is survived by one son: Walter W. Momeier, III and his wife Rhonda of Charleston, SC; one daughter: Greta Momeier Waters and her husband Wesley of Charleston, SC. He was able to spend the rest of his retired years with all of his grandchildren, William Pierce Waters, Amanda Kathryn Momeier, Johanna Momeier Lingenfelter.
