Horace Butler Tate, Jr., 80, of Summerville, husband of Helen Bunch Tate, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003 in a Charleston hospital. Funeral service will be held Friday, March 28, 2003 at 1 o’clock in Bethany United Methodist Church Spell Chapel, Summerville. Burial with Masonic Rites will be in Carolina Memorial Park, North Charleston. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Ridgeville Masonic Lodge #361 and Order of the Eastern Star #290: Charlie Bunch, Tony Bunch, Leland Stack, Jr., Greg Roumillat, Jack Roumillat and John Mizell. Friends may call at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, Summerville from 6 until 8 o’clock this evening. Mr. Tate was born on February 4, 1923 in Camden, South Carolina, a son of the late Horace Butler Tate, Sr. and Gladeyse Rast Tate. He was a graduate of Charleston High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from The Citadel in 1951. He was a member of the Ridgeville Masonic Lodge #361; Order of the Eastern Star, Ridgeville #290; Charleston VFW #5901; Charleston B.P.O. Elks Lodge #242 and American Legion Post #179. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II. He was a retired Chemist with Medical University of South Carolina. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Helen Bunch Tate of Summerville; 5 step-children, Martha J. Roumillat and her husband, Jack E. of Summerville, George C. Stroble, Jr. and his wife, Ellen of St. George, Lynn Connor and her husband Andy of Dorchester, Linda Rhode and her husband Richard of Dorchester, Alice Messick and her husband Dale of Summerville; 11 step-grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; special friends, Wesley, Jennifer and Judith Ann Gibson and Sarah Burns Gibson.
