Herman Read Rice Jr., 86, passed away at his home, March 4, 2006, in Daytona Beach. He was born in Lancaster, S.C., and relocated to Daytona Beach in February of 1968. He was a Citadel graduate and served in the Army during World War II. He was an executive at Rice Maintenance Company and owned Mac’s Friendly Shoe Shop until 1983. He was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and a former member of the Daytona Beach Kiwanis Club. Read was a devoted husband for over 50 years and a loving father and grandfather. He was predeceased by his wife, Aileen Seville Rice, and is survived by his daughter, Clare Rice, Stateline, Nev.; son, Thomas S. Rice, Orlando; grandsons, Forrest J. Underwood, who is attending the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Alexander R. Underwood, Tallahassee; brothers-in-law, James W. Seville Jr. and William M. Sherrill; and sister-in-law, Eaton Seville Sherrill; nephew, William M. Sherrill Jr., and his family; and his niece, Mary Sherrill Mallory and her family, all of Statesville, N.C. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 216 Orange Ave., Daytona Beach, FL 32114 or Halifax Urban Ministries, P.O. Box 5053, Daytona Beach, FL 32122, in lieu of flowers. Graveside funeral service will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Saturday, March 11, at 11 a.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Haigh-Black Funeral Home, Ormond Beach.
