George Dale Matthews, 73, a retired Colonel in the US Air Force, husband of Jacquelyn B. Matthews, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, after a long illness. He was born November 2, 1929, in Charleston, SC, son of the late H. L. Matty and Elsa Bargann Matthews. Dale is survived by his son, George D. Chip Matthews, Jr., and daughter, Gayle M. Hall, both of Awendaw, SC; His younger son, Craig F. Matthews died March 27, 2001. His sister, Jean M. Freeman of Kiawah, brother, Captain H. Lynn Matthews, Jr., US Navy Ret., of San Diego; and W. Clay Matthews of Awendaw, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. One grandson is a Marine now serving in Iraq. Dale will be remembered by his boxing, football, and swimming participation at the Citadel (1946-1950). He was Southern Conference Champion in boxing three times while competing in the 165 pound class, was 22-1 overall in boxing. On graduation he was awarded the US Air Force ROTC Outstanding Award, receiving a regular commission in the US Air Force. He attained his pilots wings and flew 100 combat missions in the F86 Saber in Korea 1952-53. He graduated from the US Air Force Squadron Officer s School and the US Army War College, 1968. His Foreign Service was in Germany, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Dale retired from the Pentagon on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. G. Dale Matthews are invited to attend the memorial services of the former in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL Saturday, June 21, 2003 at 2:00 o clock.
