Fred Neal Mitchell, M.D., 77, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born Feb. 6, 1926, in Charlotte, N.C., a son of George J. Mitchell and Annie Griffin Mitchell, who preceded him in death as did two brothers, Dr. Joe E. Mitchell of Bristol Virginia, and Lt. Col. George J. Mitchell of San Diego. Dr. Mitchell graduated from Charlotte Central High School in 1943. He then attended The Citadel, after which he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II with service in the Okinawa Campaign. He received his bachelor of science degree from the University of The South in 1948, a master of arts degree from the University of Virginia in 1949, and a medical doctor degree in 1953. After an internship at Emory University, Dr. Mitchell trained in pediatrics and surgical cardiology at the University of Virginia. From 1959 until 1981, he practiced medicine in Charlotte. In 1981, he became associated with Beecham Laboratories in Bristol Tennessee, and later with SmithKline Beecham, from which he retired in 1991 as director of clinical research. Dr. Mitchell was author of numerous scientific papers and was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and various other medical organizations. In Charlotte, Dr. Mitchell served several terms as chief of pediatrics at Presbyterian and Mercy Hospitals and was a president of the Charlotte Pediatric Society. He served three terms as a trustee of the University of the South from the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. He was a life long Episcopalian and served on the vestry of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte and Emmanuel Church in Bristol Virginia. Dr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Judith Lawrence Mitchell, of Bristol Virginia; two daughters: Anne Mitchell Vitale of Plantation, Fla.; and Jane Mitchell Baugh of West Simsbury, Conn.; a son, Fred Neal Mitchell Jr. of Bristol Virginia; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 o’clock Thursday evening at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 700 Cumberland St., Bristol, Va. The service for Dr. Mitchell will be conducted at 10 o’clock Friday morning at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Dr. Paul Hamilton Fuller IV officiating. The committal and interment will be held at a later date in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Huntersville, N.C.
