DANTZLER, Heyward HOLLY HILL Mr. Heyward Newton Dantzler, 79, of the Providence Community, died Saturday, November 4, 2006 at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. Karen E. Starr officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Dantzler was born November 5, 1926 in the Providence Community a son of the late F. Newton Dantzler and Ollie Mae Williams Dantzler. He was a graduate of Providence High School and The Citadel where he was Commander of the Summerall Guards, a Distinguished Military Student, and a member of Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He was a veteran of the Merchant Marines and also an Army veteran serving as Lieutenant in the Infantry. After being discharged from the Army in 1949 he started farming with his father. He was a member of the Orangeburg County Farm Bureau having served as a County Director, County President, and State Director. He was a member of SC Farm Bureau staff as Commodity Director. Mr. Dantzler organized and was a member of the Incorporating Board of Directors of the SC Farm Bureau Marketing Association and served as a former Secretary and was a former member of its Executive Committee. He was a former member of the Board of SC Farm Bureau, a member of its Legislative Committee, and a number of its special and Ad Hoc Committees. Mr. Dantzler was a former Secretary and President of the SC Young Farmers Association, and a former Secretary for the National Young Farmers Leadership Conference. He received the distinguished Service Award from SC Farm Bureau, and he was awarded Outstanding Young Farmer by the Orangeburg Jaycees and the U.S. Jaycees. He also received a Resolution for service to Agriculture in the Southeast from the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture. Mr. Dantzler served as Chairman of Special Agriculture-Livestock Study Committees for Governors Bob McNair and John West. He was a member of the Steering Committee for Governor West’s Task Force for Economic Growth for South Carolina. Mr. Dantzler was a former Chairman of SC Agriculture Council and former State Chairman for Farm City Week. He was former member of the Board for the Agriculture Council of America, and a former member and Chairman of the Board of the Mountain Top Agriculture Project of Eastern Kentucky-a cooperative project with Morehead State University, Martiki Coal (MAPCO), and Pocahontas Land Development (Norfolk Southern Corporation). Mr. Dantzler was Assistant Manager; Assistant Director for Agribusiness for Southern Railway from 1963 to 1986. From 1986 to 1990 he was Public Affairs Representative for Norfolk Southern Corporation, and from 1990 until retirement he was Manager for Agribusiness/Public Affairs for Norfolk Southern Corporation. Mr. Dantzler was a former member of the SC House of Representatives from Orangeburg County and was elected to Secretary of the House Agriculture Committee. He was an Executive Assistant to Governor James Edwards. Mr. Dantzler was a former member and Chairman of the Board of the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Hospital, and a former member of the Foundation Board of The Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg Calhoun Counties. He was a former member and Chairman of the SC Association of Hospital Governing Boards, and a former delegate to the National Congress of Hospital Governing Boards where he was member of the Council of Governance (Executive Committee). Mr. Dantzler received the Merit Award by the South Carolina Hospital Association, and a Resolution by the SC Association of Hospital Governing Boards. Mr. Dantzler was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor James Edwards. Mr. Dantzler was a lifetime member of the Providence United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, member of the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, and Chairman of the Finance Committee. Surviving are his wife, Blonde Shuler Dantzler of the home; daughter, Mrs. Robert (Delores) Harper, Jr. of Georgetown; sons, Heyward Woody (Frankie) Dantzler, Jr. of Santee, Jack (Wendy) Dantzler of Orangeburg, and Barton (Mary) Dantzler of Holly Hill; grandchildren, Mary Ashley Harper, Shelley Harper, Carrie Harper, Rebecca Harper, Zachary Dantzler, Hailey Dantzler, Amber Dantzler, and Rachel Dantzler; step-grandchildren, Michael John Bailey and Matthew Bailey; and step-great grandchildren, Madelynne Bailey, Michael Bailey, Jr., Elisabeth Bailey, Mason Bailey and Taylor Bailey. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Avinger Funeral Home, and other times at the home.
