COLUMBIA Joseph A. Gibbes died on Friday, June 17, 2005, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Columbia in 1932 and was the son of the late Hunter A. and Viola J. Gibbes. He was a graduate of Columbia City Schools and graduated from the Citadel, University of Virginia Law School and the Harvard Business School. He was admitted to practice law in Virginia, Massachusetts and South Carolina. He served with the U.S. Army Occupations Troops in West Germany, where he learned a great deal about beer and wine consumption. Mr. Gibbes was Counsel for Choate, Hall and Stewart in Boston, Mass. He later returned to Columbia as a Managing Director and General Counsel for the former firm of G.H. Crawford Company. He was a lead developer for Bell Isle Condominiums in Georgetown, and later, Director and Treasurer of Gibbes, Poston and Company. And most of all, he was the best advertisor for Herb s Grill. Mr. Gibbes was Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Columbia Art Museum and awarded the John Richard Craft Award for Distinguished Service in 2004. He was also the Chairman of the Board of Historic Columbia Foundation. He was a member of The Palmetto Club and Forest Lake Country Club, where he was long-time Tennis Chairman and seven times its Doubles Senior Tennis Champion. He was also a member of the Columbia Sailing Club and was the South Atlantic Yacht Club Racing Association Champion in the E-Scow class for seven years. He was also a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Mr. Gibbes is survived by his child bride of 44 years, Nancy Corson Gibbes daughters, Ellen Pawling Gibbes of Greenville and Elaine Guignard Gibbes of Craig, Colo. sons-in-law, Russell Teasley and David Grettenberg grandchildren, Corson Gibbes Teasley and Kota Gibbes Teasley and his beloved Labrador retriever, Deuce. A graveside service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in Elmwood Gardens and Cemetery. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Robert McAlister, Frank Wyman, Martin Jones, Raymond McElveen, James Murphy, Nicholas Moore and Jack Sproat. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Columbia Art Museum. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
