Thomas W. Lane, ’38

COLUMBIA Funeral services for Thomas Wannamaker Lane, 88, of Columbia, South Carolina, will held on Wednesday May 18, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mr. Lane was born on March 6, 1917, in Columbia, the son of the late Richard I. and Florrie Wannamaker Lane. He graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, in the Class of 1938. During World War II, he served in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Captain. Following the war, Mr. Lane returned to Columbia, entering the residential real estate business. He was associated for many years with the firm of Lane Taylor and Wolfe, of which he was one of the founders. Mr. Lane served as President of the Columbia Board of Realtors and the South Carolina Association of Realtors. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank, the Board of Directors of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, and the Board of Directors of the Columbia Better Business Bureau. Mr. Lane was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral where he served as vestryman, and Senior and Junior Warden. For over seventeen years taught Sunday School and served as Superintendent of the children s Sunday School program. After his retirement from real estate in Columbia, Mr. Lane lived for over 25 years in Litchfield Beach, South Carolina where he served at vestryman and Junior Warden as well as chairman of the Capital Campaign to raise funds for the present All Saints Waccamaw Episcopal Church Building. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Litchfield Property Owners Association and the Litchfield Golf Company, Inc. Mr. Lane was predeceased by his first wife, Elise McLain Lane, a brother, Richard I. Lane, Jr., a sister Sarah Lane Parker, and a son Thomas W. Lane, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Sanford Lane a sister, Page Lane Steinert daughters and sons-in-law Weezie and Johnny Caskey, and Page and Joe Hodson daughter-in-law Jan J. Lane stepchildren and spouses, Deas and Chappy Manning Kaki and Belton Zeigler, Meredith and Bobby Stepp, and Lucy and Myron Barwick 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be John Lane Caskey Thomas Bell Caskey John Philip Hodson, Jr. B. Deas Manning, IV Campbell McLain Manning Belton Townsend Zeigler, Jr. Sanford Manning Zeigler and Kenneth James Wood. Mr. Lane was a man of genuine courtesy and had a great love for children. He will be remembered as a true Southern gentleman. The family expresses its deepest gratitude to the staff and nurses of Still Hopes and Hospice Care of Tri-County for their loving care of Tommy.
