Col. William GustafsonMARIETTA, Ga. — Col. William G. Gustafson, died Tuesday Feb. 22. 2005, at Kennestone Hospital, in Georgia.A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, in Marietta, Ga. Visitation will be from noon until service time at the church. A graveside service with full military honors will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. April 4, at Arlington National Cemetery.He was born Aug. 6, 1929, in Mattoon. He married Bette J. Burt. Survivors include a son, Eric Gustafson; and two daughters, Shareen Newman and Marie Christophersen.Col. Gustafson retired in 1982 after 30 years of active duty in the Infantry and Ordnance Corps. He was a Troop Commander at every level through Brigade. He was a Master Parachutist, Logistican, and Procurement Officer. Overseas assignments included Austria, Germany, Vietnam, Iran, Thailand, and Hawaii. He served as the Director of Management in the Office Chief of Staff of the Army, Vietman Conflict, The Cold War, attendance at the Coronation of the Shah of Iran, presentations to members of the British House of Commons in Windsor Castle, UK, and lecturing at the Australian Army General Staff in Canberra, Australia, listed in Who’s Who in Washington D.C.Upon retirement he worked for The American Defense Preparedness Association in Washington D.C., Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Corporation in Marietta GA, and as an independent contractor with Stover and Associates teaching and consulting on government procurement and contracting matters.He served three terms as Chairman of the Cobb County (GA) Republican Party, served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1992, served on the Advisory Committee to the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the Academy Review Committees of Senator Sam Nunn and House Speaker Newt Gingrich. He also served as a member and Chairman of the Military Affairs Council of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and the Department of Defense National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.
