Byrum James Blackwell Jr. SUMTER – Byrum James Blackwell, Jr., 88, husband of Alta Priscilla Blackwell, died Monday, June 18, 2007, at his home. Born in Red Springs, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Byrum James Blackwell, Sr. and the late Lois McCaskill Blackwell. Mr. Blackwell was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was a 1939 graduate of The Citadel and a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He served in North Africa, Sicily and France. He was a retired District Manager of C.I.T. Financial Corporation. Surviving are his wife of Sumter; a daughter, Cherry Bridges of Florence, and other children, Randolph M. Tiller and wife Laurie of Florence, and Janice Walker and husband Sidney of St. Simons Island, Georgia; a granddaughter, McCown Bridges, and other grandchildren, Lew Walker, Corley Strunk and husband John, Morgan Tiller, III and wife Diana, John C. Tiller, Maggie Bullwinkel and husband George; and a great-granddaughter, Mary Lawrence Tiller. He was preceded in death by a son, Byrum James Blackwell, III and a sister, Jane B. Oliver. Memorial services will be held 11 A.M. Wednesday in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Mark Durrett officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately following the service and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home & Crematory, 221 Broad Street, Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements.
