ASHEVILLE, NC – Walter Earl Smith, 72, of Morgantown, GA, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2003 at Memorial Mission Hospital after an extended period of declining health. Mr. Smith was born March 7, 1931 in Charleston, SC. He was the son of the late William Leland and Edna Scharlocke Smith. He was a graduate of Bishop England High School and The Citadel in Charleston. He was a Veteran of the US Marines Corp. Mr. Smith retried as the Director of Human Resources for ANS, Inc. in Milledgeville, GA. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of almost 35 years, Judy Smith; 9 children: Walter Smith, Jr., Thomas Smith and Timothy Smith, all of Charleston, SC, Mark Hurt of Macon, GA, Miles Hurt of Isle of Palms, SC, David Smith of Rome, GA, Lynda Oswald of Charlotte, NC, Ellen Veroi of Charleston, SC and Carol Robinson of Marietta, GA; 2 brothers: Ronald Smith of Boyton Beach, FL and Edward Sweeney of James Island, SC; 3 sisters: Kathleen Utley of Fort Mills, SC, and Barbara Burkett and Rita Burns, both of Charleston, SC; 19 grandchildren; and 6 great-grand-children. Memorial services are planned for Saturday, August 16, 2003 at 1:00 PM at Old St. Andrews Parish Church in Charleston, SC. Rev. Victor Morgan and Rev, George Tompkins will both officiate. Another service is planned for Sunday, August 24, 2003 at 2:00 PM at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Blue Ridge, GA. Rev. Victor Morgan will officiate.
