Allen Charles Edgar of Gainesville died Tuesday. He was 74. Mr. Edgar was born in New York City and raised in Greenwich, Conn. He was a retired mining developer and community activist. He was a graduate of The Citadel and Harvard Business School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was the last member of his family to manage the EPK Co., founded in the early 1900s. He was also vice president of Edgar Plastic Kaolin Co. in Putnam County and founder and past president of Mid-Florida Mining Co. in Marion County. He was a founding board member of Oak Hall School in Gainesville and former chairman of the board of Dance Alive! He was active with the Harn Museum. He served several terms on the vestry of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Gainesville and was active in First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Joan Edgar of Gainesville; sons David Edgar of Charlotte, N.C., and Dwight Edgar and Douglas Edgar, both of Gainesville; and three grandchildren.
