MT. PLEASANT — Karl Avon Shuler, 79, entered into eternal rest on January 21, 2004 at his home in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Born in Chesterfield, SC, on September 12, 1924, he was the son of Rev. Harry D. Shuler of Providence, SC, a Methodist minister, and Aileen Brown Shuler of Florence County, SC. He was a Mason, a talented speaker, Sunday school teacher, photographer, artist, and handyman. He was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.Mr. Shuler joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 at the age of 17. He trained in B-24 bombers and special operations and was shipped overseas with the 6th Photo Tech Squadron to Guadalcanal. As the squadron worked its way up the Pacific Islands to Japan, he survived several crash landings and was wounded several times. After WWII, he attended The Citadel and later joined Union Carbide as a District Manager for its Pyrofax Gas Division, advancing to Division Manager for the entire Southeastern Region. His love of flying continued after the war as he enjoyed his own airplane for personal as well as business use. He was a Civil Air Patrol Squadron Commander in Florence, SC, attaining the rank of Major and participating in many search and rescue missions. Mr. Shuler is predeceased by his parents, three brothers, Rudolph of Camden, Robert D. of Conway, Glenn of Florida, one sister, Marilyn Shuler Rogers of Hemingway and one infant son. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Madeleine Keller Shuler of St. Stephen and a sister, Helen Shuler Powell of Hemingway. Children, Baron K. and his wife, Glenda Dawkins Shuler of Atlanta, Cheryl Shuler Bowie and her husband Gerald B. Bowie of Athens, GA, Michael B. and his wife Suzanne Newton Shuler of Mt. Pleasant, Kenneth D. and his wife Gayle Craven Shuler of Mt. Pleasant, nine grandchildren, Jessica and Zachery Shuler of Atlanta, Brent Bowie and his wife Maria of Athens, GA, Ryan Bowie of Atlanta, GA, Michael, Jr., and Anne Shuler of Mt. Pleasant, Kenneth, Jr. Shuler of NY, NY, Kristyn Shuler of Mt. Pleasant, and James Shuler of Mt. Pleasant, one great-grandchild, Spencer Bowie, of Athens, GA, eight nieces and eight nephews.Funeral services will be held at one o’clock, Saturday, January 24, 2004 in John Wesley United Methodist Church in Charleston, with burial following at Live Oak Memorial Gardens on Highway 61. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC.
