John Kindred Massey CONWAY John Kindred Massey, 90, of Conway, husband of the late Buff Tanner Massey, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at the Conway Medical Center.Born June 14, 1914, in Marion, he was a son of the late Bernard Weaver and Maude Edwards Massey.Mr. Massey was a 1931 graduate of Florence High School, and in 1935 he graduated from The Citadel with a bachelor?s degree in business administration. He was an Army veteran of WWII serving as a captain in the Pacific Theatre. He was president of Massey and Company Inc., a Conway wholesale grocery business, from 1941 until his retirement in 1974.He was a member and former deacon of the First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school and was a former choir member.Mr. Massey was a member of the Horry County Higher Education Commission from 1966 to 1984. He was chairman of the commission in 1968 and served as commission treasurer for three years during the 1970s. In February of 1993, Mr. Massey was named as an honorary founder of Coastal Carolina University.Massey was a 46 year member of the board of directors of Conway National Bank, a Charter member of the Conway Lions Club, served on the board of directors of Conway Hospital, two of those years as board chairman, member and past president of the Conway Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the American Legion, Horry Post III.Surviving are four sons: Jim Langston and his wife, Debbie, Kinny Massey and his wife, Donna, Philip T. Massey and his wife, Holly, Berns Massey and his wife, Paula, all of Conway; eight grandchildren, Buffy Smith and her husband, Andy, Ginger Massey, Christian Massey, Beverly Wilhelm and her husband, Tad, Mark Massey, Rachel Massey, Wendy Massey, Tanner Massey; two great-grandchildren Drew and Dever Smith.Mr. Massey was predeceased by his sister Mercede Massey.Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2005, at the First Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Bagnal and J. Anderson Bass officiating.
