COLUMBIA Joanne C. Carter, 87, died Sunday, June 12th, in Columbia, South Carolina, after a long illness. She was born February 27, 1918, the daughter of the late Ruth and Clyde Crouch of Florence, S.C. Joanne attended Lander College in Greenwood, S.C. and graduated from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C. with a degree in home economics. On April 27, 1944, she married Alexander McIver Bowen. They lived in Charleston, S.C. where Mr. Bowen was a professor of mathematics at the Citadel. They eventually moved to Lake City, S.C. where he furthered his career as an Architect. As a housewife and homemaker, Joanne encouraged and supported her husband in his professional and civic careers. Following Mr. Bowen s death in 1951, she taught in the Scranton, S.C. schools. In 1958, Joanne married C. Clair Carter of Lake City. She was a member of the Lake City United Methodist Church, the UMW, the local Book Club, Garden Club, and the Lake City Country Club. Intellectual curiosity was a part of Joanne s personality. She was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed historical novels. Gardening was a lifelong endeavor for Joanne, and she and her plants seemed to share equally in the rewards. She was skilled at needlework and decorated her home and those of her children with beautiful examples of needlepoint. Though not a musician, Joanne strongly encouraged her daughters careers in music. She attended numerous concerts and hosted many receptions on their behalf. She acknowledged on many occasions that she could not carry a tune, but lived vicariously through her daughters talents. Joanne was predeceased by her husbands, Alexander M. Bowen and C. Clair Carter, and by her brother, E. C. Crouch. She is survived by two daughters, Janet Marks of Columbia, S.C. and Phyllis Bowden of Malvern, Pa four grandchildren, Jennifer Guzman of Smyrna, Del., Elizabeth Shuffler of Charleston, S.C., Carter Shuffler of Washington, D.C., and Jason Shuffler of New York, N.Y. two great grandchildren, Jack Guzman and Benjamin Guzman of Smyrna, DE and two brothers, John B. Crouch of Florence, S.C. and Robert L. Crouch of Arlington, Va. At the time of her death, Joanne was a resident of Laurel Crest in West Columbia, S.C. She leaves behind many wonderful friends and caretakers at Laurel Crest. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of her life at 11 A.M., Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at the Lake City Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M.
