Bernard Warshaw, husband of Ann Lee Wagner Warshaw, of Walterboro, S.C., died February 27, 2014 at his residence. He was 93. In addition to his wife of 67 years, he is survived by three daughters: Susan Warshaw Garfinkle and husband Jerry, of Charleston, Beth Warshaw of Marietta, GA, and Amy Warshaw Pearlstine-McNally, and husband Charles of Stuart, FL. There are four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. There is one sister, Anna Mae Gardner of Walterboro and three nephews of Atlanta, GA. Mr. Warshaw was born October 27, 1920, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Murray Warshaw. He graduated from the Walterboro High School, class of 1937, and then attended The Citadel, where he graduated in the class of 1942. He served in the European Theatre of Operations during World War II, and was assigned to an anti-aircraft artillery battalion which participated in campaigns in Africa, Sicily, Italy, Anzio, France, and in Germany, and was instrumental in the Battle of the Bulge. He received his honorable discharge in 1945 with the rank of Major in the army reserves, and upon leaving the armed forces, he partnered with his father at Warshaw’s, a clothing store in Walterboro, founded in 1920. He worked at Warshaw’s & Son beginning in 1945, and held the offices of Vice President, President and Chairman of the Board. Mr. Warshaw served the State of South Carolina in numerous capacities for the past 55 years. He was appointed by Governor Ernest F. Hollings to the South Carolina State Development Board in 1959…serving until 1966. He was appointed by Governor McNair to the South Carolina Mental Health Commission in 1967…serving for over 20 years. He served as Commissioner Emeritus, and was later elected chairman of the board of trustees, of the Colleton Medical Center in 2000. Mr. Warshaw was a former director of the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Walterboro and St. George. He was a board member of the Colleton County Farmers Home Administration, was an officer and director of the Shrine Club, the Elks Club, the Lions Club and the Masons. He was a District Committeeman and Finance Chairman for the Pineland District of the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Warshaw was a member of the Colleton County Commission to create The Tuskegee Park and monument at the Walterboro Airfield and was a member of the advisory board of the Shepherds Care Alzheimer’s Committee. He was a former president of the Colleton County Literacy Council, and was a cabinet member of the Hope Lodge of The American Cancer Society. He served as President of the Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina for two years, was State Chairman of the Naming Committee of the VA nursing home in Colleton County, and was an advisory member to the both VA nursing home and the Mental Health commission in Walterboro. Mr. Warshaw received an Honorary Degree of “Doctor of Business Administration” from the Citadel in 2001, was awarded the Silver Crescent Award by Governor Jim Hodges in 1999, and received the Order of the Palmetto by Governor John Carl West in 1973. The Colleton County Health and Human Resource Buildings were named the “Bernard Warshaw Complex” by the Colleton County Council in 1998. He was a member of Temple Mount Sinai in Walterboro, where he served as president and lay reader, and was also a member of Temple Beth Elohim in Charleston. Graveside services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 in the Live Oak Cemetery in Walterboro. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5:30-7:30 PM at their home, 230 Overhill Drive in Walterboro.
