Memorial service for George Hollis Cone, 72, of Columbia, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2014, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The family will receive friends from noon until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A reception will follow the service at Defender Services, 9031 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC 29209. Mr. Cone died Sunday, January 26, 2014. Born in Pensacola, Fla., he was a son of the late George Bliss Cone and Annie Clyde Miller. He was raised in Cottageville, S.C. and was a 1964 graduate of The Citadel. Mr. Cone served on several executive boards including the Indian Waters Council Post 553 Boy Scouts of America, past executive board for South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, Board of Directors for Building Service Contractors Association International (BSCAI), and Clemson University Pace Board. Mr. Cone served as past Lions Club President in Irwin, N.C., and was a member and supporter of the Citadel Brigadier Foundation. He was a long time supporter of March of Dimes, American Heart Association, and American Diabetes Association. During his career he served as the CEO of Defender Services. He is survived by wife, Deborah DuBose Cone of Columbia; son, Ashley C. Cone (Kristin) of Columbia; daughters, Dr. Courtney O’Brien (David) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Dr. Holley D. Cone of Charleston; grandsons, Spencer Hewitt, Holden Cone, and Branson Cone. Mr. Cone is also survived by stepson, William H. Hussey III (Amber) of Charleston; step grandsons William Hussey IV and Hudson Hussey. Mr. Cone was predeceased by his first wife Beverly Baker Cone.
