Dwight Layman Thomas Jr., 77, of Macon, Ga. went to be with his Lord on Monday, January 6, 2014. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 2pm at Christ Episcopal Church in Macon, Ga. with the Rev. Harriet Simmons officiating. The family will greet friends following the service in the Cloister Room at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hearts Secured Ministries P.O. Box 1534 Fort Mill, SC 29716 or Christ Episcopal Church, 538 Walnut St. Macon, GA 31201 Dwight was born in Fort Mill, SC to the late Clevia Fatima Hatchet Thomas and Dwight Layman Thomas Sr. After graduating from The Citadel in 1958, he enrolled in the Officer Candidate School of the United States Army. Once commissioned, Dwight served faithfully in an artillery unit until his Honorable Discharge as a Captain in 1968. He then returned to Fort Mill, where he met the love of his life, Jody, and began a lifelong career in management in the textile and printing industry, working for M. Lowenstein and Sons, Cranston Print Works, and Culp Industries. Dwight was an avid golfer and could be found most weekends on the golf course and with the many, many good friends who surrounded Jody and him. Dwight also served as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church and helped start a new congregation of the Anglican Church in Pinehurst, NC. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jody Blackwell Thomas, of Macon and sons John Hamlin Blackwell lll and his wife, Jeania, of Weddington NC, and Dr. Robert E Blackwell and his wife, Kathy, of Macon as well as five grandchildren: Justin Thomas Blackwell, Jamie Blackwell Orr, Grace, Isabel, and Graham Blackwell, and his sister, Jane Thomas Fairman, of Charlotte NC and two nephews Scott and Colin Fairman.
