John Milton Smeak, 86, husband of Georgia Knox Bailey Smeak, died Saturday morning, December 14, 2013. Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late John Duff and Theresa McIntosh Smeak. Milton was a graduate of Greenville High School and received a BA degree from the Citadel. He served in World War II in the U.S. Maritime Service as a Communications Officer and was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Police Action. He was associated with Alester G. Furman in the Commercial Real Estate Department and later with Walter S. Griffin Co. in the Commercial Real Estate Department. He was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church. Milton was a former member of the Board of the Greenville Speech and Hearing Clinic and the Greenville area Red Cross Board. He was a member of the Green Valley Country Club, the Duplicate Bridge Club and the Greenville Area Citadel Club. He was the Forty-first President of the Association of Citadel Men, a member of General Mark Clark’s Committee of 100 and a Past President of the Greenville Citadel Club. Surviving in addition to his wife of 63 years are a son, John Milton Smeak, Jr. and his wife, Lyn Farmer Smeak of Greenville, SC; a daughter, Charlotte Smeak Verreault and her husband, John F. Verreault, III of Spartanburg; and three grandchildren, John Milton Smeak III, Elizabeth Marshall Smeak and Margaret Bailey Verreault; two sisters, Hilma S. Lamont and her husband, Col. Max Lamont of Tullahoma, TN and Dr. Ethel M. Smeak of Stanton, VA. Services will be today, Sunday, December 15 at 3:00pm in the chapel of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Orders Parlor at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Citadel. Tags: 1947
