Robert Burns Moorhead, Jr., of Chapel Hill, N.C., died peacefully on Monday, November 5th, 2013. Born in Gastonia, North Carolina on October 10th, 1932, he attended the Citadel, which he credits with saving him from juvenile delinquency, and later transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in 1952. He fell in love with Chapel Hill and was determined to return, which he did in 1967. Married to his high school sweetheart, Frances Sanders for close to 60 years; he created the family he always wanted as a child but never had. Bob worked for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, retiring as Associate Dean for the School of Public Health in 1993. Bob had a keen wit and sharp mind and was a formidable debater. He is remembered for his lifelong love of learning and intense curiosity about the world. He had an adventuresome spirit that included learning to fly airplanes, to sail and to operate ham radio. He was a history buff, loved to hike and played the clarinet in the village band. He enjoyed travel, time at his lake cabin, and reading. Mostly he loved spending time with his UNC friends and colleagues talking politics and “solving the world’s problems.” In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to National Public Radio by supporting WUNC (1.800.962.9862, or via website [email protected]) or by donating to your local public radio station. Bob is survived by his three daughters, Lynn Morton (Rit), Jane Lyonnais (Mike) and Becky McGrath (Scott); beloved brother, George Moorhead (Marianne) and nine grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 20th at 4:00 p.m. at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery located between Fordham Blvd (US 15-501 Business) and Legion Road. We will gather at the top of the Cemetery (Legion Road side) for a bagpipe processional to the gravesite where Bob will be laid to rest with his wife, Frances. A celebration of life will follow at the home of his daughter Jane Lyonnais of Chapel Hill. Tags: 1953
