Funeral services for Mr. Christopher C. “Butch” Lewis, Jr. will be held Tuesday 12:00 noon (viewing 11:00 a.m.) at First Calvary Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held this evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Mr. Christopher C. “Butch, The Tax Man” Lewis, Jr., son of the late Deacon C.C. Lewis, Sr. and Margaret Porter Lewis, was born August 21, 1946, in Charleston, SC. On Thursdaymorning, October 24, 2013, he quietly left his daughter, Tracey, in his room at Warriors Walk, W.J. Bryan Dorn Veterans Hospital and continued on “The King’s Highway.” After graduating from Wallace High School in 1964, he served in the United States Air Force 1964 – 1968. He matriculated to The Citadel and was a proud 1974 graduate. At the time of his death, he was one of the oldest African American graduates. While a student at the Citadel, Chris designed his famous “Anti-Confederate Flag” with the black fist clinching the Confederate flag. He campaigned steadfastly to “bring the flag down” from the top of the SC State Capital Building. He was a loyal member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., serving in various capacities including a term as Polemarch. He proudly represented Kappa Alpha Psi on the National Pan-Hellenic Council at Columbia, SC and served as NPHC President 2006 -2008. He was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church and sang bass as a member of the Madrigals Choir. He was a loyal member of the “Benedict College Alumni and Friends Chorale” and a charter member of the “Reid Chapel Concert Choir”. Chris simply loved singing and sharing his God-given bass voice to God’s Glory! Chris had a most diverse employment history. His pathway included: Charleston Air Force Base, Charleston Naval Base, Southland Corporation (7-11 Stores), Scotchman Stores, Insurance/Investment Services, Greenlawn Cemetery, Auto Broker, and Tax Services (The Tax Man). He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved, Mazie G. Lewis; his faithful daughters, Christi, Tracey (Houston, TX), and Mazie L. Parkmond; his loving grandchildren, Lena Simone and Drew Allen Parkmond; sister, Sondra (James) Campbell; brothers, Deacon Rodney (Soundra) Lewis and Kavin Lewis all of Charleston, SC; brother-in-law, Henry F. (Vera) Glover, Jr.; and a host of loving aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
