Edward J. (Big Ed) Harrington, of West Columbia, 73, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 28, 2013. He was born in Gaffney on April 25, 1940 to the late Ernest and Gerry Harrington and husband of Phyllis Knowles Harrington. He was a 1962 graduate of The Citadel, where he was a captain of the first Citadel football team to win the Southern Conference. Ed was a loving husband and father who attended Northside Baptist Church. As a Sunday School teacher he was devoted to studying and teaching God’s word In addition to his wife, also surviving is a son, Edward Harrington, Jr. (Little Ed) and wife, Fiona of Chapin, SC; two daughters, Kimberly Ann Darling of Bend, Oregon and Amy Harrington Berry and husband, Charles of Boone, NC; a step-son, Edward Sutler and wife, Angela of Gaston, SC. He is also survived by his devoted sisters and their families, Mary Jo and Robert Tone and niece, Rebecca Tone, Rita and David Heatherly all of Spartanburg; his step-mother, Betty Harrington of Gaffney; and his mother-in-law, Alice Knowles of Ridgeland. “Poppy” will be missed greatly by his grandchildren, Kate and Bryce Harrington, Wesley and Travis Darling, Addi, Emily, Annabeth and Elliana Berry, Anthony and Ashton Sutler; great-grandson, Austin Sutler; and his puppy dogs, Sophia and Hilton. Mr. Harrington was privileged to have many loving family members and friends, who will feel this loss keenly, but rejoice in knowing that he is with his Savior. Mr. Harington was preceded in death by a niece, Denise Tone. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 PM on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Blakely Funeral Home. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2:00 PM in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Berry officiating. Interment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be his former Citadel Football teammates. A memorial service will also be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Northside Baptist Church, 4347 Sunset Blvd., Lexington, SC.
