John Lewis McDonald, 88, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Barbara Miller McDonald entered into eternal rest Friday, June 28, 2013. His funeral service will be held Monday, July 1, 2013 in The Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street at 10:00 am. Interment, The Second Presbyterian Churchyard. A reception will be held in the fellowship hall following the interment. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Mr. McDonald was born October 26, 1924 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of Allie McDonald and Rosa Hunt McDonald. He was a graduate of the High School of Charleston and The Citadel. He had further schooling at the College of Charleston and Harvard Business School. He was a veteran of WWII serving as lieutenant in the US Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Gilbert Islands (CVE107) in the Pacific theatre.. He was a retired Director of Personnel with the Post and Courier. He was an Elder of The Second Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the St. Andrew’s Society and formerly a member of the Hibernian Society and the Sertoma Club of Charleston. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Miller McDonald of Charleston, SC; son, John “Jay” L. McDonald, Jr. (Kristen) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; a daughter, Ann McDonald Hackett (James) of Charleston, SC; and two granddaughters, Susanne McDonald and Mary Hackett. The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Charleston and also the family’s caregivers with In Laverne’s Care, Laverne and her angels, Celeste, Ella and Helen.
