Charles H. Powell, ’41

Funeral services for Charles Halliburton Powell, 93, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Dan Sansbury will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 4-6 p.m. at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Charlie “Polly Poo” Powell was born on February 28, 1920 in Hartsville to the late Frederick Lamar and May Durham Powe Powell and passed away on May 3, 2013 after a hard fought, 23 year battle with various forms of cancer. He was a proud Citadel (1941) graduate and a member of the Summerall Guards. He served as an Army officer in WWII on Okinawa and other stations until 1945. He was a successful dairy farmer for 43 years and served on the Sumter Dairy Board of Directors for 38 years where he also served as President, Vice-President and as a Director for Young’s Food Stores. His dairy farm continues today, under the Chaplin brothers, as the only remaining dairy farm in Darlington County. Charlie earned his nickname in high school, but it carried over to his siblings, nieces and nephews and to his beloved great-grandchildren, the last of whom was born in August 2012. Poo was a gregarious man who was a friend to all and loved to tell stories especially to his grandchildren and great-grands. His love of family was expressed in grand terms in everything he did and was returned in kind by them. Every family gathering was cause to celebrate. His love of life, his positive attitude and his determination to fight the cancers, the diabetes and heart problems inspired all who knew him. In the words of his doctors, he was truly an amazing man. Charlie is survived by his daughter, Allison Carole Powell Croft (Tom); four grandchildren, Deborah Oelze (Todd) of Blythewood, Thomas Charles Croft (Becky) of Charlotte, Daniel Clifford Croft (Cortney) of Clifton, Va. and Catharine Aitken (Frank) of Columbia; thirteen great-grandchildren, Eric and Erin Oelze; Taylar, Chaz and Mason Croft; Andrew, Ryan, Dylan and Matthew Croft; Ian, Josie, Charlie and Logan Aitken; a sister-in-law, Connie Lawton Powell Huggins of Atlanta and many nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Evelyne Davies Powell; his sisters, May Morrison Whaley and Maria Harvey; his brothers, Frederick Lamar Powell, Jr. and Joseph Leslie Powell. Special thanks to his caregivers, Ashley, Susan, Yvette and Mary from Agape Hospice and to Mary Lyles, his long-time friend and caregiver from the VA. Thanks also to the doctors and nurses at McLeod Hospital for their care in his final days and to Dr. Raymond M. Chapman, his personal physician and family friend for many years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 213 West Home Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550 or Agape Hospice, 113 North Fifth Street, Hartsville, SC 29550.
