Julie C. Trouche, CGC ’73

Julie Ann Carr Trouche, 84, widow of Paul Edwin Trouche, died peacefully on Monday, April 8, 2013, with her children at her bedside. She is survived by her four sons, John Paul Trouche (Janie), Perry Edwin Trouche (Alice), Michael Francis Trouche, and Thomas Gerard Trouche (Ariel), and her two daughters, Mary Helen Trouche Dantzler (Lynn) and Therese Trouche Smythe (George), as well as fifteen grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Timothy Joseph Trouche and her daughter, Mary Aleda Trouche. Julie Ann cherished her family and her faith, the inspiration for an energetic life as a mother, teacher and friend. She was born on Yonges Island on November 6, 1928, the daughter of Samuel Perry Carr and Marguerite O’Connor Carr. Julie Ann was a gifted student at St. Paul’s High School and at the age of sixteen was offered a full academic scholarship to Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY. She graduated in 1949 with high honors in Biology. After returning to Charleston with plans to attend the Medical College of South Carolina, Julie Ann married Eddie Trouche on February 4, 1950, and chose family over a promising career in medicine. As an only child whose father died when she was a teenager, Julie Ann dedicated herself to her large, loving family. Togetherness as family was her guiding principle for meals, prayers, church, vacations and social events. Julie Ann went back to school in later life, earning a Master’s Degree from the Citadel and began teaching at Ashley Hall. Countless Ashley Hall alumnae will remember her fondly from their days in her English and South Carolina History classes, as well as from her years directing the annual Christmas play. Julie Ann was a devout Catholic who attended daily Mass and served the Church in many capacities. She was a Eucharistic Minister, a lay reader, and she taught Sunday school and adult bible study. Many Charlestonians may remember the sight of Julie Ann walking with her children to church every morning before school. She had an avid interest in history and literature, was a licensed tour guide and a member of the book committee of the Charleston Library Society. Julie Ann was also active in the Marians, the Theresians, the Century Club, the Laura Bragg Society, the Garden Club of Charleston, the Charleston Bible Society and her all-time favorite, the Second Wednesday Book Club. The relatives and friends of Julie Ann C. Trouche are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Stella Maris Catholic Church, Sullivan’s Island. The Rite of Committal, at St. Lawrence Cemetery, will be Private. Friends may call on Wednesday evening between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Smythe, 20 New Street. Memorial contributions may be made to Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy PO Box 21833 Charleston, SC 29413 or Stella Maris Catholic Church PO Box 280 Sullivan’s Island, SC 29482 or Mepkin Abbey 1098 Mepkin Abbey Rd. Moncks Corner, SC 29461. Her guestbook may be signed at www.jamesamcalister.com. Arrangements by JAMES A. MCALISTER Funerals & Cremation 1620 Savannah Hwy. 766-1365.
