Rembert Garris, 87, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Nell Garris died Thursday, February 14, 2013. A Graveside Service will be held Sunday, February 17, 2013 in the Bethany Cemetery, 10 Cunnington Street at 3:00 pm. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 pm in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street. Rembert Garris was born January 7, 1926 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Edward Thomas Garris and the late Monica Lorraine Grooms. Rembert was a graduate of the Citadel, class of 1954 and received his Master’s Degree from Boston University in 1966. He was a Professional YMCA Director from 1954 to 1984, serving YMCA’S in Charleston, Raleigh, Gastonia, Boston and Durham. He served in the US Navy as a Gunnery Instructor from 1944 to 1954, including World War II. Mr. Garris was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where he taught an adult Sunday School Class for 26 years. He was also a member of the Raleigh Jaycees, Gastonia Optimist Club, Boston Toastmasters, Durham Kiwanis Club, Durham Scottish Rites, and Charleston Masonic Lodge #5. He is survived by his wife, Nell Fennell Garris of Charleston, SC; a son , Mark R. Garris of Raleigh, NC; a daughter, Cheryl G. Warren of Norfolk, VA; two grandchildren, Edward Garris of Raleigh, NC, and Laurie Warren of Norfolk, VA; a sister, Janet Garris Meacher; a sister-in-law; 3 nephews; 2 nieces; and 15 first cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Elmo of Charleston, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disability Board of Charleston County, P. O.
