Joseph Elliott Spann, Jr. 91 of Isle of Palms died Saturday, September 29, 2012 peacefully in his home. Mr. Spann was born in Bamberg, SC on August 9, 1921, a son of the late Joseph Elliott Spann, Sr. and Thelma Lewis Spann. He was a graduate of The Citadel class of 1942 and was weeks away from attending his 70th class reunion. He was a retired Colonel in the United States Army Reserve. Mr. Spann was Executive Vice President and General Manager of Pearlstine Distributors for 40 years. He served on numerous boards including the Greater Charleston Hotel Motel Association. He was an avid golfer, gardener, active member of the Hibernian Society, and lover of all things Citadel. Mr. Spann was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis Allen Spann. He is survived by his three children Walker A. Spann (Kay), Polly Spann Kosko (George), Joseph E. Spann III; two grandchildren: Emily S. Laird (Jamie), Elliott W. Spann as well as two great-grandchildren: Walker J. Laird and Ella L. Laird. He is also survived by his brother, Albert Pringle Spann (Joyce) and nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be held in Bamberg, SC.
