Nancy S. Matthews, 71, of Summerville, wife of 52 years to Charles E. Matthews, passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at her residence. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held Saturday, August 11, 2012, at 10 o’clock at James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memory Gardens, Summerville. Mrs. Matthews was born December 2, 1940, in Roseboro, North Carolina, daughter of the late O. Averette Spivey and Melba Sutton Spivey. She received her Master’s Degree in Education from the Citadel. She taught school for 32 years in North Carolina and South Carolina. She was a member of the Charleston County International Reading Association, the International Reading Association and was a former member of Old Fort Baptist Church and Bethany United Methodist Church. She loved quilting, cross stitching and especially loved her dog, Mac. In addition to her husband, she is survived by: one daughter and one son: Melba Jane Spivey and her husband Dr. David Spivey of Raleigh, North Carolina and Charles E. “Eddie” Matthews, Jr. and his wife Kerri of LaVergne, Tennessee, two granddaughters: Katie Crocker of Raleigh, North Carolina and Anya Matthews of Scio, New York, two grandsons: Charles E. Matthews, III and Philip Matthews both of Lexington, North Carolina, one brother and one sister: Tom A. Spivey of Savannah, Georgia and Carole Anchando of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and her 3 little faithful companions, Pepper, Jake and Mac.
