William R. Voigt (Bill) died peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 15, 2012, following a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 81 years old. Bill was born on August 23, 1930, in Webster, MA to William R. and Mildred Voigt. His family moved to South Carolina in 1944 where he attended St. Angela Academy High School, in Aiken, SC, graduating in 1947. Bill attended The Citadel in Charleston, SC and was ever influenced by its core values and guiding principles of leadership. Upon graduating in 1951, he entered into military service with the U.S. Army, Artillery, serving tours of duty at Camp Stewart, GA and Thule, Greenland. He was honorably discharged in 1953. Later that year, he joined E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Plant, SC supporting the Atomic Energy Commission. In 1955, he moved to Pittsburgh, PA to work on the Nuclear Submarine Program with Westinghouse Bettis. In 1959 he moved to Maryland and joined the Atomic Energy Commission as a Nuclear Engineer in the Nuclear Reactor Program. He excelled in numerous positions and rapidly advanced to the rank of Senior Executive, Category 5 as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy. He retired in 1988 with 33 total years of Government service. While in Aiken, S.C. Bill met and married Julie Prothro Voigt, on October 4th, 1952. Together they raised their family of five, three girls and a set of twin boys. Bill’s greatest love was the many activities he enjoyed with his family, most memorable being trips to North Litchfield Beach, South Carolina. His other favorite pastimes were boating on the Chesapeake and Lake Thurman, GA. He enjoyed playing golf and his many travels around the world both for work and with his family for pleasure. He was a member of the US Power and Sail Squadron, and the Lions Club, and many other civic associations throughout the years. In addition to Julie, his lovely wife of nearly 60 years, Bill is survived by his five children: his daughter, Laura Cook of Summerville, SC ; his son and daughter in-law, Randy and Penny Voigt of Chesapeake, VA; his son and daughter in-law, Dave and Patty Voigt of Millersville, MD; his daughter and son-in-law, Liz and Jeff Salton of Crownsville; and his daughter and son-in-law, Tracey and Brad Fye of Arnold; his grandchildren: Kristen Cook and her fiance Bobby Smith, Rob and Jessica Voigt, Erin and Katie Voigt, Matt and David Salton, Brandon and Adam Fye; and one Great Grandchild, Kieran Smith. He is also survived by his loving sister, Sandy Voigt Shemanski and husband Paul and their daughter (Bill’s niece) Paula Green and her husband, Andrew Green. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 21st, 1100 am at St. Pauls Anglican Church in Crownsville, MD (Crownsville Road and Generals Highway).
